Growing Global
By Neil Lenok
Managing Director, American River International
APPMA members looking to expand their international business skills and contacts have a lot to cheer about. APPMA has contracted American River International to hold a series of educational teleconference seminars on import and export issues, as well as publish an update to the APPMA Guide to Exporting along with an Import Guide supplement.
The first of the teleconference series was held on September 30, 2004. The topic, “How to Maximize Overseas Sales Opportunities for Pet Products”, focused on how APPMA members can increase their export sales. Topics included a variety of issues ranging from identifying distributors and negotiating contracts with them to shipping products in the most seamless manner. The next teleconference seminar, scheduled for December 2, 2004 at 2 pm EST, will focus on importing pet products into the US. This seminar will address issues such as how to identify suppliers overseas, effective costing and logistics for these imports and dealing with US government compliance issues involved in importing.
In addition to delivering the Export/Import Teleconference Series, ARI is in the process of writing a newly-revised APPMA Guide to Exporting with an accompanying APPMA Import Guide supplement. Both Guides will be available to members by first quarter 2005. The Guides will highlight some of the following key issues:
• Post 9/11 security and compliance issues for imports and exports
• Specific marketing studies and material content on various countries and regions
• Logistics and shipping
• Preparing for meetings with foreign buyers
• Pertinent and specific details and issues for pet products imports
• Getting help from key resources (i.e. government and private sector sources)
• Designing your export strategy
• Plus many more important issues
Both the novice and experienced exporter can benefit from utilizing these and other helpful resources brought to you by APPMA. Be sure to take advantage as a means to expand your profitability in the arena of global trade.
