• Pet Industry Coalition - Update
More than 20 representatives of the pet industry met recently to discuss ways that every segment of the industry can support each other in disseminating important, positive information concerning pets and pet ownership. A number of concepts have been identified and are being developed by working groups within the coalition. A follow-up meeting in late April has been scheduled to review the fully developed concepts and integrate them into an ongoing plan for use by all segments of the pet industry.
• Public Service Announcement (PSA) Campaign - Update
Over the past months, you may have read about APPMA’s undertaking of an innovative media campaign that we believe is in the best interest of the entire pet industry. This program, appropriately named PAL—Pets Add Life, is aimed at promoting responsible pet ownership as well as increasing pet adoption and the use of pet products. This campaign has also been designed in such a way that it can be adapted to deliver a wide variety of important pet related messages on behalf of the pet industry.
While the program is national in scope, it easily lends itself to a regional or local concentration and creates community involvement. The program involves providing pre-produced PSAs and news stories to TV stations at no cost to them that they then turn around and sell to local advertisers – much like current nationally syndicated TV shows operate. The advantage of this package is once a station has agreed to “buy in” to the program it is then committed to airing the PSAs because advertisers have paid to sponsor them. This ensures that the spots will run on a consistent basis, not just as filler. The campaign also ensures that favorable pet stories are delivered on a consistent basis even when there isn’t a current hot topic. It is designed so that participating TV stations will develop and implement regular pet segments, designate ‘pet reporters’ and extend the campaign to other elements including special events, radio and print advertising.
To launch the campaign throughout the country, national sponsors are needed to make this package attractive to the largest media groups with the widest array of television markets. Sponsors will be credited on every element of the campaign, which currently includes PSAs, posters, a brochure, TV news scripts, and print advertisements. In short, it is an effective way to brand your company as one that cares about pets and pet owners and be a voice for the pet industry. We are anxious to move ahead with this project in an effort to strengthen the entire industry and welcome your feedback and participation. APPMA Trade Show Coverage
This year’s trade show garnered some of the best media coverage in the show’s history! Dozens of trade, local and national members of the press attended the show and covered it in newspapers, TV programs, and magazines. The Times Picayune, a local New Orleans newspaper with a circulation of more than 260,000, extensively covered The APPMA Show as well as almost 20 of our exhibitors’ products.
In addition, NBC’s The Today Show, the nation’s number one rated morning news program reaching more than four million viewers daily, attended the show and ran a five minute segment on March 26th. The segment included video clips from the trade show and featured more than a dozen of our members’ products, including many of the New Product Showcase winners! To put that kind of coverage into perspective, a 30 second ad on The Today Show would cost $26,000!
APPMA also received coverage from one of the pet industry’s best known veterinarians and experts, Dr. Marty Becker. His column, The Bond, covered the trade show and featured more than a dozen of our members’ products. This column runs in more than 350 newspapers nationwide with a readership of 15 million! The trade show and member products were also featured for an hour on his nationally syndicated radio program, Pets Unleashed, on March 27th, which airs in more than 40 markets across the country.
Ongoing Positive Exposure:
In addition to the trade show coverage, we are continuously promoting pet ownership, the health of the industry, and our member companies and products in the news.
